Tanzania Health Promotion Support (THPS) is an indigenous NGO established under nongovernmental organization act No 24 of 2002 in 2011. THPS works in partnership with the Ministries of Health, Community Development, Gender, Elderly and Children (MoHCDGEC) and Regional Administration and Local Governments (PORALG) with a goal of ensuring accessible high quality health care services to Tanzanians; through strengthening of health systems for quality health services including comprehensive HIV/AIDS Prevention, Care, Support and Treatment.

What We Do

THPS supports the provision of comprehensive HIV Prevention, Care, Treatment and Support services across general, key and vulnerable populations in Pwani, Kigoma, and Zanzibar. THPS believes sustainable health services result from Health systems strengthening at all WHO six blocks:

Improving service delivery through technical assistance, mentorship and training to health providers to ensure services are implemented according to national/international standards

Health infrastructure upgrades for improved quality of services e.g. repairs to facilitate TB infection control, placement of laboratory equipment,

National level support to scale up HIV viral load testing

Improve health records documentation and storage including the use of electronic Health management information systems (HMIS) and data quality assurance

Improve provider skills to foster appropriate use of national central supply chain system for medicines, supplies and HIV commodities. THPS is a member of various MoHCDGEC technical working groups

Provide financial support to local government authorities/ NGOs and Faith based organizations to complement their HIV response

Research and Implementation Science activities:

We contribute to evidence based interventions for improved public health services in collaboration with national and international like-minded organisations. THPS is currently involved in the following researches

Impact evaluation on coordinated, integrated use of non-medical health workers on linkage to and retention in HIV/AIDS care in the United Republic of Tanzania (Pwani, Kagera, Mbeya regions)

Enhancing retention and clinical outcomes in HIV care and treatment centers in Kigoma, through use of paediatric and adolescent friendly services

Basic Accountability to Stop III-treatment (BASI) Research Project

Using PEPFAR platform to improve maternal and neonatal health at primary health care facilities (dispensaries) in Pwani

Tanzania Health Promotion Support (THPS) currently works in Pwani, Kigoma, Kagera, Mbeya, Songwe, Geita, Njombe, Tanga and Zanzibar also THPS supported Mtwara region from 2012 to 2016. Additionally THPS supports the Ministries of Health headquarters in mainland and Zanzibar through technical assistance towards improving service delivery through guidelines, policy and training materials development, health information management systems (HIMS) and improvement of laboratory equipment maintenance

Comprehensive HIV Prevention, Care, Treatment and support services  among general population- Pwani, Kigoma regions as part of Afya Kwanza Project, supported by PEPFAR/CDC

Comprehensive HIV and TB prevention  and harm reduction services  among key and vulnerable population – 25 districts of 13 mainland regions; supported by The Global Fund- THPS is a Sub recipient of Amref

Increasing uptake of cervical cancer screening services among Women living with HIV – Njombe, Geita, Songwe and Tanga regions. From July 2019 all 13 districts of Dar es Salaam and Mwanza

Research and Implementation Science:

Human Papilloma Virus (HPV) self-collected tests and mobile phones for expanded cervical cancer screening coverage in the limited resource, high-burden setting of Tanzania. Collaborating with University of Minnesota and Ocean Road Cancer Institute (ORCI), with funding from University of Minnesota -Hawley Grant.

Evaluation of the impact of a community health agent intervention on antiretroviral therapy retention and adherence in Tanzania -Pwani, Kagera and Mbeya regions.

Enhancing HIV Retention and Clinical Outcomes in Kigoma, Tanzania through Paediatric- and Adolescent-friendly Services – Kigoma region.

Unique Patient Identifier: Profiles of selected President’s Emergency Program for AIDS Relief (PEPFAR) countries – Zanzibar Isles
