Gairo District was established by Government Proclamation No. 75 dated 02/03/2012 following the division of Kilosa District, and later the implementation of Council activities officially began in July 2013.

Gairo is located northwest of Morogoro Region and is accessed by the main road Morogoro-Dodoma.

The area of the District is 1,851.34 Square Kilometers. it borders Kongwa and Mpwapwa Districts to the West, Kilosa is to the South and to the East are Kilosa and Mvomero.

In addition to the North it borders part of Kongwa and Kiteto Districts.

Gairo is estimated to have a population of 193,011 (Me 93,206 and Ke 99,805, this is according to the 2012 Population and Housing Census.

The average household population is 5.2 equivalent to an increase of 2.6 percent per year.

The district is made up of two divisions, 18 wards, 50 villages and 304 suburbs (23 of which are under the Gairo Small Town Authority).

There is one electoral constituency of Gairo. A total of 24 councilors including 18 elected and 6 are special seats.

Gairo District Council is the overall overseer of the development process. Its main functions, among many, include the following:

Develop and implement laws, guidelines and guidelines regarding how the District Council should be developed and managed.

Ensuring food security for its people.

Strengthen the implementation of the population in accordance with Council requirements, guidelines and guidelines.

Establishment and management of social service infrastructure necessary for water promotion, health, education, security and culture of the population.
